It began with
a material
One encounter at Mediamatic changed the direction of Andy Cartier’s design practice. The work that followed became Studio Cartier.

Fungal Art Series / studio study. A later chapter of the practice.
Learning to
grow things
During an internship at Mediamatic in Amsterdam, Andy Cartier met Peter Oei and discovered the possibilities of mycelium as a material. Peter became a mentor. What began as curiosity about a living process became a new way to approach design: start with what the material does, then work with it.
Encouraged to pursue real projects, Andy left a design master’s programme and began building a practice through experiments and collaborations. Studio Cartier began in 2020, founded by Andy Cartier and Rosa Hämäläinen.
From experiment
to place
The practice moved between objects, artworks, research and spaces. A surfboard core asked what a grown composite could do inside a familiar object. Living Shelter brought the material to architectural scale. The Fungal Art Series lets the surface itself carry the image.
Andy spent four years in the Netherlands and two years in Belgium, and is now based in Dubai. Projects have taken the practice across Europe, the United States and the Middle East.
