Material research
Exploring plant fibres, grown composites and potential applications through hands-on experimentation.
Working where design, biology and making meet.
How the studio began ↗
From a handful of fibres to an object, an artwork, a space.
Studio Cartier is an experimental design practice founded in 2020 by Andy Cartier and Rosa Hämäläinen. Its work brings natural materials into dialogue with contemporary design, moving between research, craft and production.
Mycelium is a recurring material and a way of thinking about making. The practice works through observation, prototypes and collaboration, giving equal attention to the behaviour of a material and the life of the object it becomes.
Projects connect the Netherlands, Europe and the UAE, spanning independent artworks, collaborative installations, furniture and teaching. Andy Cartier’s wider material work includes professional research and the related NUMU platform.
