Accessibility
This website should work for everyone, whatever device, browser or assistive technology you use.
Last updated 18 October 2026
Standard
The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What we do
- Every page is checked with automated accessibility testing (axe) at desktop and phone widths before release.
- All functions work with a keyboard, with a visible focus indicator and a “Skip to content” link.
- Images have text alternatives. The silent growth timelapse has a written description and a Pause button, and stays paused if your device asks for reduced motion.
- A small orange square drifts across pages as decoration. It never covers text or controls, can be paused from “Pause the spore” in the footer, and is off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- The opening animation can be skipped, is shown once per visit, and is left out entirely with reduced motion or without JavaScript.
- Text and controls meet AA colour contrast and minimum target sizes, and the site respects Windows high-contrast mode.
Known limitations
Some archive photographs have short descriptions rather than detailed ones. Linked external websites are outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
