A surfboard as proof of concept.
Growing Airplanes brought Airbus, InHolland and SIGN into a composite-material investigation. A surfboard offered a familiar form in which to test whether a grown core could participate in a layered object.
The 2022 Studio Cartier portfolio describes the prototype as a collaboration with the composites department at InHolland Alkmaar. It is distinct from the later KOZ surfboard work in France.
Grown core, layered reinforcement.
The documented prototype combined a Grown.bio mycelium substrate with horticultural waste, linen fibres and a 90% biobased epoxy resin. Its value in the archive is the sequence of questions it made tangible: cultivation, forming, reinforcement and use.
The surfboard remains a proof of concept: an early material test rather than a finished product specification.
In detail.
