What can a shelter begin with?
ReRoot was presented at Dubai Design Week in 2024 by Dima Al Srouri, Dalia Hamati, Andy Cartier and Rosa Hämäläinen. The team asked how a shelter proposal could draw on material close to its setting: palm waste, mycelium and local craft.
The project was an installation and a proposal for modular construction. It explored a response to displacement without presenting the exhibited structure as deployed housing.
Palm fibre, grown into form.
Mycelium binds plant fibres into elements with a stone-like appearance. In the public installation, individual pieces and a supporting framework let visitors see the relationship between a material sample and an inhabitable idea.
The built installation and the architectural visualisations show two parts of the proposal: material brought into public space and possibilities drawn beyond it.
