Approximate overall dimensions of the shelving system.

01 / The brief

A display with a provenance.

Kinoko was developed for Essential Glasses at Cloud Gallery in Amsterdam as a display for eyewear. Completed in September 2024, the shelving system is approximately 305 × 180 × 41 cm. Instead of hiding the material behind a neutral retail finish, it makes the grown panels part of what visitors see.

02 / The construction

Regular frame, irregular surface.

Oak beams and brass details give the system a measured structure. Peter Oei grew the mycelium panels on elephant grass harvested around Schiphol; Twan D. crafted the oak beams locally. The panels interrupt the frame’s precision with their own texture and variation.

The offset shelves make a rhythm across the wall while leaving room for the eyewear they hold. The material is both a functional surface and a record of its origin.
